The body of a missing (drive yourself, no boating experience required, rental boater) was recovered from North Lake Tahoe on Sunday afternoon. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified him as 27-year-old Sayen Sengupta, 27, of Boston. Deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard went to the area of Dollar Point Pier on Saturday afternoon after authorities got a 911 call about a person in distress.
People aboard a boat with 13 passengers told deputies they had been towing three people on an inner tube when two riders fell in the water and became distressed, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Sengupta, the boat’s operator, dove into the water to help the riders. He was last seen swimming toward the stranded pair when he went underwater and did not resurface. The two people who fell out of the inner tube are OK, the sheriff’s office said.
Sengupta’s body was found around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office said. The water depth where crews were searching is an estimated 600 to 800 feet. -Placer County Sheriff

Call Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe “Station Vacation” and the 18-member crew will quickly tell you that it’s not all fun and games working on the largest alpine lake in North America. Summertime is abuzz with boaters, swimmers and sunbathers enjoying the lake ringed by the towering Sierra Nevada.
The crystal blue waters can lure water-goers into a false sense of security. Unpredictable mountain weather patterns can change rapidly, turning a calm outing on the lake into a rough day on the sea. High winds and eight-foot waves are not uncommon on Lake Tahoe. “I don’t think people realize how dangerous this lake can get in a few minutes,” says Petty Officer 2nd Class Kauakea Colon. “It’s dangerous. With just two 25-foot response boats to cover the 72 miles of shoreline, the station depends heavily on four nearby Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas and other federal, state and local law enforcement and emergency response agencies to fulfill its many missions. The Coast Guard has maritime jurisdiction over the lake because it extends across two states – California and Nevada.
Located at more than 6,000 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe is the highest lake of its size in the United States. Working at such altitude poses some challenges – boat engines lose about 1,000 rpm and maintaining physical fitness is more difficult in the thin air.
Still, despite its challenges, crew members say they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. “Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been stationed or visited,” says Colon. “It’s like a good movie – you hit ‘pause’ and no matter what scene it’s on, it looks like a good, quality photo.” Written by Chief Petty Officer Class Sherri Eng, 11th US Coast Guard District.

There are amazing granite rock formations that adventurous people enjoy jumping from around Lake Tahoe. Some of the cliffs are very high and their remote wilderness location make successful rescue very difficult. We’d be happy to point them out so you can come back and jump them on your own. Due to liability we can not allow you to jump from cliffs over 10 feet high while you are with TahoeJetBoats.

“So much fun on the lake with Captain Dave! We had an awesome time on Sunday with Tahoe Jet Boats. Captain Dave was great – the kids thought he was really cool. The spot where you meet him is amazingly beautiful and worth the drive – I could have spent all day there. We did a half day trip and I think it was the perfect amount of time although it went really fast so maybe a full day would have been even better. The kids had a blast tubing and touring the huge lake.” –Deanna K

“Great 1/2 day on Lake Tahoe with Captain Dave. First trip to Lake Tahoe. Three adults and 3 teenage boys 12-18 years old. What a fantastic time. We had the morning time slot so the parking lot was empty and very close by, bathrooms were clean and also nearby and Captain Dave had everything set out waiting on the beach. When we left in the early afternoon, things had really filled up. The jet boat is spotless, very well equipped and the ride is smooth. Don’t underestimate the value of having no deadly propeller to deal with every time you are getting in and out of the boat from a water activity. Tubing was fun beyond expectations, even for those in our crew who are tad water shy. Captain Dave was 100% responsive to the desires of his passengers and was a knowledgeable guide with interesting tid bits to share about the lake and the sights. We particularly appreciated that he spelled everything out in advance as regards required paperwork, directions, how to dress, what to bring. We followed his recommendations and pointers, arrived on time and were equipped with everything we needed to be completely comfortable for the duration. Exhilarating day. Highly recommend it and would do it again on another visit.” –Pilar R

“Fantastic lake experience on Tahoe Jet Boats. This was my 2nd time on a boat on Lake Tahoe but my first time with Tahoe Jet Boats. What sets Tahoe Jet Boats apart is that Captain Dave is an owner/operator and really cares to give you the best Lake experience. We were a group of 6 but one of my friends had to catch a flight back early, so needed to get back to shore only 1.5 hours after we started. No problem as Captain Dave put those Jets to use and made sure she was back at shore but without us losing too much fun time on the Lake. He brought us to all the prettiest places and we had time to idle and take in all of the beauty. We did tubing and he even was able to get us close enough to be daredevils and jump off the rocks at Rubicon bay. The boat seats 6 comfortably and provides a very smooth ride, even when it is a little choppy. I would definitely rent from Captain Dave again. He is responsive to emails and provides all the essential info on his website ahead of your bookings.” –Megan S

“The man who runs this company is nothing short of AMAZING Captain Dave… where do I even start? From his eager to help attitude to the detailed instructions on how to book, where to meet, and what to bring… I was 110% happy with this excursion. We booked 4 hours with Dave on his jet boat, which was plenty! His boat was pristine clean and went over the lake tahoe waves like butter. He was very accommodating from beginning to end. I can’t believe he runs the show by himself. When my family goes boating, we all work as a team. For him, he made it look easy! He gave us the history of the lake, brought us to some great scenic spots, and overall tailored our adventure the way we wanted it to go. We enjoyed hiking up to the tea house in the middle of Emerald Bay, enjoyed some wakeboarding, and utilized the 3 man tube. I can’t say enough good things about Tahoe Jet Boats. And to top it all off, he took pictures with his phone and sent them via email that captured the beauty of the lake. Thank you Dave… can’t wait to see you in the winter!” –Jessica L

“Do This Now-You Will Have a Blast. Captain Dave is a great tour guide, boat captain and camp leader. We hired him and his boat for a five-hour expedition of Lake Tahoe. We wake-boarded, water-skied, rode the floating Barco Lounger and even hiked to a teeny tiny castle. All with a three-year old and a six-year old.The kids loved it. We loved it. You will love it, too. As Dave grabbed skis and rigged up the wakeboard, I was reminded of boating with my father. My Dad would be furious at all of us for being in the way, and the fact that he had invited anyone to go boating in the first place. Not Dave. He was calm, cool, collected and happy to do anything we asked. And if you’re local and have some pipe dream of getting your own boat with all the toys, the maintenance alone will cost you a session out on the water with Captain Dave. Hire him; it will be a day to remember.” –Heddy L

He was very patient in teaching both my teens how to wakeboard. I really appreciated Dave’s great communication from booking all the way until our excursion started. He went out of his way to warn us about potential bad weather forecasts and suggested steps to help us mitigate the risks.” –Lauren F

“Dave was an excellent host and captain. Our group of 6 guys were staying in South Lake Tahoe, which was not far form the pick-up location. Dave was extremely flexible with his schedule and allowed for us to have a fun, care-free afternoon on the lake. We were able to do everything from wake boarding to tubing to wake surfing with out worrying about anything. Dave knew all the spots to go and did not disappoint. We will definitely be returning customers next year.” –Tim S

“Wonderful Adventure on Lake Tahoe! This was our first time visiting Lake Tahoe. We rented a vacation home for a week for a family getaway that included our adult children. Not being familiar with the lake, we arranged to have three half day trips with Tahoe Jet Boats. Captain Dave made sure we enjoyed the best Lake Tahoe has to offer. He tailored each day to our specific desires: water sports, sightseeing, rock climbing, relaxing on the boat and on a beach and stopping in for punch at the pier bar at Chamber’s Landing. He was a patient water sports instructor to some novices in our group. He taught us a lot about the lake, its history and its weather patterns. His boat is equipped with everything you might need to enjoy a day on the lake including a wakeboard, waterskis, snorkeling equipment and a three person tube. He provided beach chairs and stand-up paddle boards. He was personable, prompt and attentive to safety. He took so many pictures and sent them to us immediately. Our family enjoyed our time with Captain Dave and will definitely seek him out when we (hopefully) return to the area.” –Leigh Ann

“1st class service on the lake. After a few hours researching boat rentals for the south shore I stumbled upon Tahoe Jet Boats website. And boy am I glad I did. What a treat it was to enjoy the lake with your own private chauffeur. It was so easy to understand what they offer and costs by just reading through there website. And I was surprised that the costs was the same versus other companies. But what you get from Tahoe Jet Boats is the choice of water skiing, tubing, snorkeling and wake boarding. We decided any of the above activities we wanted to do. If time permits try them all. It was a perfect way to spend the day on the lake. I’m looking forward to planning our next vacation at Lake Tahoe with Tahoe Jet Boats. Thank you for a fantastic time.” –ottovision

“BEST DAY IN TAHOE! We went out on Captain Dave’s Tahoe Jet Boat in early August. On our last night in Tahoe, my husband and teenagers agreed that it was the best thing we did all week. Dave took us out to the middle of the lake, where he pointed out geological features and the deepest spots in the lake, and then down to Emerald Bay, where we saw several ospreys in their huge nests before jumping off the boat to climb up to the teahouse on Fannette Island. Captain Dave knows how to provide a safe but exciting tubing experience — he worked his way to and from Emerald Bay and Sugar Pine Point like he was doing donuts in a parking lot. Dave was very professional but also a funny, friendly guy — it was fun to spend a few hours with him.” – KE211

“Easily the most fun I’ve had in Tahoe without snow.We rented a boat with Dave for 4 hours on a Saturday morning and had such a blast! Everything was awesome–the parking lot we had intended to meet at was blocked off, so Dave met us out at a nearby beach and drove us out on a zodiac with no problems. He was friendly, professional, and energetic, and had every piece of water sport equipment you could ever want. We tubed, wake boarded, water skied and laid out in the sun while getting to see some of the prettiest sights on the lake. Dave was an awesome wake board and water ski instructor, and coached a few of us through getting up on our first try! (Going out early was perfect, since the water was flat enough for the beginners to get the hang of) Plus, the biggest bonus for our big group of girls — he took HUNDREDS of awesome photos over the course of our trip and had them uploaded for us to use by the next morning. “Originally we thought we wanted a Tahoe rental boat we’d drive ourselves, but after comparing rental/charter prices in north and south Lake Tahoe, we agreed the all inclusive Tahoe Jet Boat was the safest boat for our kids to do watersports and the best value. Tahoe Jet Boats responded promptly to my online inquiry calling me back in minutes answering all my questions so we made a reservation to have the boat meet us at our rental home dock in Rubicon Bay. The boat arrived early and it was impressive, much bigger than I had anticipated (google: yamaha 24 foot boats) and spotless. After a quick safety briefing our party, three adults and three kids, boarded and immediately realized it’s a really fast and comfortable boat!
Captain Dave was so patient with the kids, he gave them detailed instruction on how to ski and wake board (they’d never done it before) and he was a really positive coach when they had repeated difficulty getting up. Finally, after several attempts, everybody succeeded and the on-board Gopro captured the best moments for the kids to post to their Facebook walls.
After watching the kids initial struggle with boarding and skiing, the adults opted for the 4 person wake tube. Captain Dave towed us slowly into the middle of the lake with big lazy turns getting the tube to skip over the wake like a stone and then we circled back to Rubicon Point, past the DL Bliss wilderness which was a perfect way to experience the beauty of Tahoe without the crowds. The entire Tahoe Jet Boats experience was fantastic, from the booking conversation to the amazing pictures and GoPro video of our day of Lake Tahoe action. Highly recommend them!!” – Cynthia S

“If you want to maximize your time on the water, look no further than Tahoe Jet Boats. We were a group of friends visiting Tahoe for the Fourth of July weekend, and while many of us grew up boating on the east coast, we did the math and found that Captain David’s offering was particularly compelling once you factored in the hassle of picking up a boat that would let you tow skiiers, picking up your group, getting some runs in, and gassing it back up at a fair price before returning to the dock. David is a consummate professional (fantastic planning & group coordinator) and a skilled boater. The 24-ft Yamaha is in great condition and is a comfortable way to spend a day on the water.” – AFiii

“Tahoe Jet Boats and Captain Dave made the end of our trip just memorable! We had an absolutely beautiful day. He convinced us to go in the morning which was a blessing. Had the lake to ourselves for a while and it was definitely more calm than later in the day. Picked out the most beautiful beach to dock from and went to the west shore of Tahoe which definitely has the prettiest beaches and water. Even trekked out and found 2 bald eagles sitting in a nest! Had binoculars for us to take a look. Had 2 teenagers with us and Dave was very patient in having them attempt to wakeboard. Ended up just tubing with the kids and it was awesome! I think my daughter went 1 hour straight on the tube by herself! Dave was very accommodating and did just as much and as little as we wanted. He even jumped in the freezing cold water with us to take pictures! Was an easy process to book and would definitely book with Tahoe Jet Boats again and will recommend to anyone coming out to Lake Tahoe.” – Laura F

“If you want an absolutely terrific, completely enjoyable, memorable, stress-free day (or half day) on Lake Tahoe, then Tahoe Jet Boats is the best way to go. We researched all the boat rental shops and prices on Yelp, but we think TJB offers the most exceptional value. TJB provides: An expert captain who knows all the sweet spots you might never find yourself; free use of water toys including water skis, a 3-person towable tube, wakeboard, floaty noodles, wetsuits, life vests, goggles, fins, snorkels; a fast-as-lightening jet boat with both sunny and shaded seating areas; photographs and video of your trip…the list goes on and on. The skipper, Dave, is also the owner, and he went out of his way to ensure we had a good time…and we sure did. Dave picked us up on the west side of the lake, about a 30-minute drive north of South Lake Tahoe, so there was no pick-up fee. We booked a half-day in the morning then enjoyed the rest of a day on the gorgeous West Shore. Thanks, Dave, for helping to make our vacation so much fun!” – John H

Tahoe locals will tell you, “the west shore is the best shore.” The unrivaled natural beauty of Sugar Pine State Park boaters beach, DL Bliss State Park boaters beach and Emerald Cove are the best experiences of the entire lake. In addition, all of these areas are sheltered from the Washoe Zephyr by tall pine trees and mountains allowing calm water conditions when the rest of the lake is rough.
The Washoe Zephyr (daily wind) blows from southwest to northeast many days from 2-8PM. The wind speed reaches 10-15mph gusting to 20+ many afternoons creating 2-3+ foot waves from mid lake to the north (Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay, Crystal Bay, Incline Village) and east shore (South Lake Tahoe and the Nevada side, Zephyr Cove). Prudent Tahoe boaters with vessels under 35 feet head for the sheltered west shore during these hours. Boating in high wind/wave conditions makes waterskiing and wakeboarding very difficult and the ride rough, wet and cold. In the worst case scenario the north/east shore wind/waves create dangerous small boating due to wave swamping resulting in disabled electrical/engines and increased potential for sinking and drowning.
Experienced Tahoe boaters, with vessels under 35 feet, head for the sheltered west/southwest shore after 1pm, enjoying Emerald Bay, Sugar Pine and DL Bliss State Park beaches and avoiding the rough afternoon water conditions in Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay, Crystal Bay, Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove.

If you want an absolutely terrific, completely enjoyable, memorable, stress-free day (or half day) on Lake Tahoe, then Tahoe Jet Boats is the best way to go. Thanks, Dave, for helping to make our vacation so much fun! –John H

TahoeJetBoats is Lake Tahoe’s only no propeller speedboat company for a very important reason. YOU!
We didn’t decide to use Yamaha Jet Boats by accident, our decision to run No Propeller speedboats keeping our clients safer was intentional.
Why Take the Chance?
August 27, 2011: “Before we go further, I would like to express our sympathies to the family and friends of Dr. Stephen Keller DDS. We followed the boating accident in several news reports and observed an outpouring of love from many for their beloved dentist and friend. In the Stephen Keller accident, Mr. Keller, a 46 year old dentist from San Jose, was the passenger of a rental boat (not TahoeJetBoats) docking at Chambers Landing on the west shore of Lake Tahoe about 4 pm Saturday August 27.He was onboard with four more men from the Bay area. The boat operator was trying to get the boat in position to dock. The boat lurched forward, Mr. Keller fell over the stern and was struck by the propeller. Stephen Keller died at the scene.“

We’re on the water everyday from May through October and see the dramatic differences in the boat traffic. Most visitors to Lake Tahoe arrive and leave on Sunday and many save their boating experience for the Friday or Saturday before they depart.
Slightly less than optimal days to rent a boat on Lake Tahoe:
Friday
Saturday
Please do not misunderstand, any day of the week on Lake Tahoe is amazing! However, for an optimal Tahoe boating experience nothing can beat being one of the only boats on the lake for miles. Lake Tahoe is so much more serene without the hordes of rampaging jet skis and ‘freeways’ of powerboats heading to and from Emerald Bay and the other beautiful ‘must see’ sights.
Savvy Lake Tahoe boating enthusiasts schedule their TahoeJetBoats (half, full or multi day) luxury boat rental two weeks or more in advance to secure the day and time they prefer, avoiding last minute ‘sold out’ disappointment.

After comparing rental boat reviews and prices online, Tahoe visitors typically choose a boat rental company that’s convenient to where they are staying. What they can’t easily know when making their boat rental decision is that depending on location, on the same day and time, the boating experience can be ‘predictably and consistently’ serene or uncomfortably rough.
Location, Location, Location:
Lake Tahoe is one of the largest, deepest and highest elevation lakes in the world. The wind at 6200 feet above sea level is a primary driver of calm or rough water conditions. Water conditions can profoundly impact your boat rental level of enjoyment. Rough water is bad, calm water is good.
On a body of water as large as Lake Tahoe, starting and ending your boat rental at a place that’s ‘consistently and predictably’ known for high wind and waves means you’ll spend a large percentage of your rental time fighting Mother Nature. Never fight with Mother Nature.
A shallow underwater shelf exists at Tahoe City, Incline Village, and across South Lake Tahoe. Each of these shelves are zones of wind generated rough water. See video below for a 3D understanding of Lake Tahoe’s underwater geography.
Boat Rental Locations to Avoid (Unless You Want to Fight with Mother Nature):
By the time the ‘Tahoe/Washoe Zephyr’ (daily wind from southwest & west to northeast & east, left to right as you look at the map) reaches the following rough zone locations, boating conditions will have become less than optimal. For a map of Lake Tahoe, go to the top of this page and click, ‘locate us on map.’Just say no to less than optimal Tahoe rental boat locations.
Tahoe City
Tahoe Vista
Carnelian Bay
Kings Beach
Incline Village
East Shore (Nevada)
Cave Rock
Zephyr Cove to Tahoe Keys (all the way across South Lake Tahoe)
A ‘Predictably and Consistently’ More Enjoyable Lake Tahoe Boat Rental Experience:
Enjoy your boat rental in the Lake Tahoe wind shadow. The west shore calm zone delivers a ‘predictably and consistently’ better boat rental experience with a bonus, it’s the most beautiful Lake Tahoe scenery from the water!
Use Your Boat Rental Time Wisely:
Going to or returning from the west shore from rough zone boat rental locations fighting Mother Nature the whole way is a waste of your limited boat rental time. Maximize your rental boat enjoyment, escape the crowds and enjoy the best of Lake Tahoe.
